Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press
SEATTLE (AP) – Cody Ross hit a tying three-run homer in the sixth inning, Ryan Lavarnway connected two batters later and the Boston Red Sox snapped their seven-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the Seattle Mariners last night. The quick turn of fortunes for Boston made a winner out of Jon Lester, who gave up consecutive homers to Franklin Gutierrez and Kyle Seager in the third, but otherwise avoided damage. The series wraps up tonight at Safeco Field with Kevin Milwood set to start for Seattle.
SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners have brought up seven players from Triple-A Tacoma and traded minor-league catcher Guillermo Quiroz to the Boston Red Sox for cash considerations. The Mariners recalled right-handed pitchers Shawn Kelley and Hector Noesi; infielders Alex Liddi and Carlos Truinfel and outfielder Casper Wells. The Mariners also recalled Mike Carp from his rehab assignment and selected infielder Luis Jimenez.
SEATTLE (AP) – The Washington Huskies knew they were taking to the practice field yesterday to prepare for their matchup with the third-ranked LSU Tigers this weekend. They didn’t expect to see a live tiger awaiting them. Sheena, a 16-month-old Bengal tiger, was sitting in a cage right at the entrance to the Washington practice field as the players made their way in. Players had not been informed beforehand about their furry guest. The idea was to help the Huskies prepare for LSU’s live mascot.
PHOENIX (AP) – The Pac-12 had a long first week that included several lopsided wins against overmatched opponents. The schedule figures to get a bit tougher this week with four games against ranked teams. Washington figures to have the toughest game of the bunch – coming off a win over San Diego State, the Huskies are headed to the bayou for a road game against No. 3 LSU. Oregon State had its opener against Nicholls State washed out by Hurricane Isaac and now has to face No. 13 Wisconsin.
