PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The U.S. Justice Department has found that Portland police use excessive force against mentally ill people, identifying violations that include frequently discharging stun guns without justification. The findings announced yesterday were the result of a federal investigation initiated last summer after several police shootings, many involving mentally ill suspects.
VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – Drug task force officers have arrested a Woodburn, Ore., man and seized 20 pounds of methamphetamine and $44,000 in cash in searches involving sites in Oregon and southwest Washington. A Clark-Vancouver Regional Drug Task Force spokesman says 28-year-old Jose Barajas-Rodriguez was arrested Wednesday in Hazel Dell, Wash.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Oregon members of Congress say Chinese diplomats were out of line when they pressed Corvallis’ mayor to force a local business owner to take down a mural advocating independence for Tibet and Taiwan. The Corvallis Gazette-Times says the Chinese consulate general in San Francisco complained about the mural last month and sent two high-ranking officials to Corvallis to add to the pressure. Mayor Julie Manning told the diplomats the mural is protected by free speech rights.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The planners of a proposed replacement bridge to carry Interstate 5 across the Columbia River say it’s time for the Oregon Legislature to come up with its share of the project. The local tab is expected to be about $450 million each for Washington and Oregon. The Oregon project director says if the state doesn’t come up with the money in about two years, federal funding could disappear.
