A Florence man was struck and killed while crossing Highway 101 last night in Florence. Police are continuing to investigate what happened, but say 65-year old Robby Roy Oakley was struck by a car as he crossed the highway at 17th street at 8:20 PM Sunday. Oakley, who worked at a local grocery store, had just got off work and was on his way across the highway to A&W for dinner. As he was crossing, he was struck by a northbound vehicle driven by 84-year old Ronald Eugene Haynes of Florence. A police spokesman said Oakley, a long time volunteer with Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue, died later at Peace Harbor Hospital.
Police say there was no evidence of alcohol or drugs being involved. The incident is under investigation.
