UMATILLA, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Corrections Department says the weekend death of an inmate at a state prison in northeast Oregon is under investigation. A statement yesterday said the inmate “died unexpectedly” late Saturday night in a general population housing unit at the prison in Umatilla. The inmate was not identified. No additional details were released.

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) – The Vancouver City Council has voted to limit personal fireworks use in the city to one day, the Fourth of July, starting in 2014. Currently, fireworks can be discharged for four days, July 1-4. The Columbian reports the new ordinance will put the city at odds with unincorporated Clark County, where fireworks can be discharged from June 28 to July 4.

DENVER (AP) – CenturyLink workers in Oregon and 12 other states in the West and Midwest are authorizing a strike, if union leaders and the telecommunications company can’t agree on a contract. The Communications Workers of America said more than 88 percent of those voting backed the action. The union and CenturyLink are trying to reach a new contract for 13,000 employees before the current contract expires Saturday night.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A horse on the Portland police mounted patrol unit has died. The 19-year-old Belgian draft horse was euthanized over the weekend after a sudden sickness. The Oregonian reports that the horse, named Ian, had served since 2005, longest of any of the unit’s horses. The unit began in 1979 and is staffed with a sergeant, six officers and 18 horses.
