Officials say that the pilot was the only person onboard the helicopter, which was contracted to the state forestry department. The helicopter was returning to its base in Grants Pass when it went down yesterday afternoon about 15 miles north of the city. The forestry department says the helicopter had just aided in two small fires in the area.

DENVER (AP) – CenturyLink and the union representing 13,000 workers in 13 states in the West and Midwest including Oregon have failed to reach a contract agreement, but have signed onto a day-to-day extension of the expired pact. The Communications Workers of America made the announcement after the existing labor contract expired at 11:59 p.m. Saturday. CWA spokesman Al Kogler says negotiations will continue and workers will remain on the job during the extension.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – External examiners are looking at evidence in dozens of Oregon criminal cases to make sure they weren’t tainted by mistakes by handwriting analysts. Oregon State Police commissioned the review. The Oregonian reports two handwriting analysts were suspended with pay last spring after state police officials identified problems with handwriting analysis in a Umatilla County case.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A ribbon-cutting ceremony with local officials and an Oscar-winning actress officially opened the Oregon State Hospital Museum of Mental Health.
