PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Twelve years after killing her husband in a northeastern Oregon campground, Liysa Northon is getting out of prison. Now 50 years old, Northon pleaded guilty in 2001 to manslaughter in the shooting death of Chris Northon, a Hawaiian airline pilot with a home in Bend. She said she was a victim of domestic violence who defended herself. The story was the subject of true-crime writer Ann Rule’s 2003 book, “Heart Full of Lies.”
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The debate over coal trains traveling through Eugene is one of jobs versus the environment. A couple of dozen coal train protesters marched to the downtown library last night where the city council heard a number of people testify for a resolution against shipping coal through a Coos Bay terminal to Asia. Opponents are concerned about coal dust and climate change. The council also heard from supporters who said a $250 million coal terminal would bring needed jobs.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – State Rep. Julie Parrish says she was behind tens of thousands of automated phone calls to Oregon voters questioning their registration status. The West Linn Republican told The Oregonian she was considering legislation on the subject and wanted to find out whether a phone call to inactive voters would spur them to vote in the November election. The calls generated complaints from nearly every county in the state.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Police in Corvallis say a young man has been found dead in a parking lot with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Corvallis Gazette-Times reports the body was found in a parking lot adjacent to a fraternity house near Oregon State University. The newspaper reports the lot is bordered by apartment buildings as well.
