Taking a look at Coast Radio Sports…
The top ranked 4A boys Cross Country program in the state competed Saturday in the Adidas-Concordia Cross Country Classic. 73 programs; five states. The Siuslaw Vikings finished second, 14 points behind 6A Summit High School of Bend… and the Vikings had a clear shot at winning the meet except for a miscue by a Siuslaw Runner at the end that allowed several runners to pass him… and allowing Summit to pass Siuslaw in the scoring. Matthew Campbell was 11th overall, Mitchell Butler 14th and Mack Marbas was 18th.
Also running in the Varsity Elite Class were the Siuslaw Girls who finished 23rd overall… Katy Potter ran the 5-kilometer course in her best time ever, 18:14.4 to finish 11th.
On the gridiron… Brody Ford ran for three touchdowns, but the Mohawk Indians took the lead in the third quarter for a 30-22 Mountain West League win over the Mapleton Sailors Friday night. Also Friday night, the Reedsport Braves picked up their second win of the season, this a 46-22 victory over the Tigers in Bandon.
In Provo, Utah, replacement Beavers quarterback Cody Vaz threw for 332 yards and three touchdowns in his first start since high school and Oregon State used a strong start and a stronger finish for a 42-24 win over Brigham Young Saturday. The Beavers are 5-and-oh for the first time since 1939 and rose to number eight in the first BCS rankings of the season.
Unbeaten Oregon stayed at number two in the AP sportswriters poll… but were listed number three in the initial BCS rankings.
