Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) – Nike is severing ties with famed cyclist Lance Armstrong, citing insurmountable evidence that he participated in doping and misled the company for more than a decade. The Oregon-based clothing and footwear company said today that it was ending Armstrong’s contract “with great sadness.”
O’BRIEN, Ore. (AP) – The sheriff’s department in a vast, rural corner of southwest Oregon has been racked by budget cuts. But people in Josephine County aren’t about to approve higher taxes to increase funding for law enforcement. So some folks have taken matters into their own hands – strapping pistols to their hips to patrol their own neighborhoods. Others have put together a sort of virtual neighborhood watch, using Facebook. Sheriff Gil Gilbertson says he’s glad for the help, but warns that law enforcement is dangerous work.
HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) – A 29-year-old man has been arraigned on a murder charge in the case of a Hillsboro woman last seen in late August. Eloy Vasquez-Santiago pleaded not guilty to the charge yesterday and is in the Washington County Jail. The Oregonian reports that he told investigators he killed Maria Bolanos-Rivera and left her body near Henry Hagg Lake in western Washington County. Investigators have not found her body.
GRESHAM, Ore. (AP) – Police in Gresham are looking for a woman reported missing after she failed to show up for work. Lt. Claudio Grandjean said 21-year-old Whitney Heichel missed her shift yesterday at a Starbucks store. Her ATM card was used at a nearby gas station several hours later and her SUV was found abandoned at a Walmart store with one of its windows broken.
