SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Two public employee unions and a top Democratic donor are pumping money into an advertising campaign targeting Republicans running for labor commissioner and secretary of state. The advertisements label secretary of state candidate Knute Buehler and labor commissioner candidate Bruce Starr as “too extreme for Oregon.”
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Police are looking for two men who mugged two men at gunpoint early today in northeast Portland and then shot a driver who refused to buy drugs. Officers had responded to the robbery after 3 a.m. in which one of the mugging victims also had his shoes taken. Officers learned the same two suspects tried to sell drugs to three people leaving a convenience store.
CENTRAL POINT, Ore. (AP) — Two-time Olympic pole-vaulter George Mattos has died at age 83 at his home in southern Oregon. Relatives said the Pole Vault Hall of Fame member died Oct. 18. He had prostate cancer. Following his Olympic career, the accomplished clarinet and saxophone player helped start the music department at the College of the Siskiyous. A scholarship there honors his legacy.
SWEET HOME, Ore. (AP) — A 71-year-old Willamette Valley man has completed a historical project to track down the 11 chapels from old Camp Adair, where a good many soldiers said a prayer before getting shipped out to fight in World War II. The Corvallis Gazette-Times reports the Army camp was dismantled after the war, and the church buildings were moved for use by congregations or as memorials.
