SALEM, Ore. (AP) – After waiting for nearly 70 years, an Oregon veteran has received three medals he earned while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. Lt. Col. Kevin Dial with the Oregon Army National Guard pinned the medals on 86-year-old Donald Madsen of Salem yesterday. Madsen received the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and Prisoner of War Medal. The Statesman Journal says Madsen’s friend encouraged him to find out what medals he was entitled to.

RICHLAND, Wash. (AP) – A 41-year-old Umatilla man has received a three-month jail sentence in Washington state for shooting another man in the chest. The Tri-City Herald reports that Edgar Martinez pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree assault. Prosecutors say the charge was reduced from first-degree assault in the plea deal partly because the victim refuses to talk to police or prosecutors.

WARRENTON, Ore. (AP) – The National Park Service has expressed concerns about a proposed liquefied natural gas terminal at the mouth of the Columbia River. The Daily Astorian says the park service sent a letter to federal regulators expressed concerns about the effect on threatened and endangered species and bald eagles, wetlands near or in the Warrenton park, and threats to historic sites and trails.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A state survey shows that Lane County topped had the highest recycling rate in the state last year, even better than the greater Portland area. The Register-Guard says the county kept 61.5 percent of waste out of the landfill through a range of recycling options. Marion County had the state’s second-highest recovery rate at 60.8 percent, followed by the Portland metro area at 59.3 percent.
