SEATTLE (AP) – Russell Wilson threw touchdowns of 38 yards to Golden Tate and 31 yards to Sidney Rice, and the Seattle Seahawks sent the New York Jets to their worst start since 2007 with a 28-7 win yesterday. Wilson was harried for much of the day by the multiple looks from the Jets’ defense. But the Seattle rookie responded with key throws, hitting Tate on the opening drive, then connecting with Rice early in the fourth quarter to give Seattle a two-score advantage. Tate added a TD pass on a reverse to Rice later in the fourth quarter. Muhammad Wilkerson’s fumble return for a TD was the only score for New York.
SEATTLE (AP) – Clarence Trent scored 18 points last night, leading four Seattle players in double figures, and the Redhawks won their season opener, defeating Montana State 87-72. Trent also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds in his 21 minutes of play. Deshaun Sunderhaus had 14 points and eight rebounds, Chad Rasmussen scored 12 and Prince Obasi added 10 points for the Redhawks, who never trailed and led 39-24 at the half.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Ahmad Starks scored a career-high 33 points and Oregon State defeated New Mexico State 71-62 in a regional game of the 2K Sports Classic last night. Joe Burton added 13 points for the Beavers, who improved to 2-0. It was the opener for the Aggies, who went 26-10 last season and won the Western Athletic Conference tournament for a trip to the NCAA tournament.
SEATTLE (AP) – C.J. Wilcox scored 22 points, Abdul Gaddy had 17 and Scott Suggs 15 to lead Washington to an 85-63 season-opening win over Loyola Maryland last night. Wilcox hit four 3-pointers and Suggs three from long range for the Huskies, who failed to advance to the NCAA tournament last year despite winning the Pac-12 regular-season title. Aziz N’Diaye (AH’-zeez EHN’-jeye) added 10 points and a career-high 17 rebounds.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Shoni Schimmel had 16 points to lead No. 9 Louisville past Portland 95-48 yesterday afternoon. Bria Smith scored 15, Sheronne Vails had 13 and freshman Megan Deines added 12. Shawnta’ Dyer scored 10 for Louisville. Kari Luttinen and Ellen Nurmi each had 10 points for the Pilots. Louisville opened the game on a 17-2 run and never trailed.
CARSON, Calif. (AP) – Robbie Keane scored twice, Mike Magee added his latest clutch playoff goal and the Los Angeles Galaxy beat the Seattle Sounders 3-0 last night to take a commanding lead in the first leg of the MLS Western Conference finals. Keane had an assist and Sean Franklin set up two goals by the defending champion Galaxy, who will head to Seattle next Sunday in prime position to earn their third MLS Cup appearance in four years.
