Taking a look at Coast Radio Sports…
A third quarter turnaround brought the Siuslaw Vikings back from a seven point halftime deficit and on to a 51-40 win over the Marshfield Pirates last night in Coos Bay. Samuel Johnson led the Vikings with 17 points; Jake Thompson had 16 and Ryan Smith had 12 points… but probably the most significant contribution in neutralizing 6’6” Marshfield Junior Matt Woods in the second half. Woods had 21 of the Pirates 25 points in the first half… and was held to only nine after the break.
The Pirates came out on top in Florence in the girls’ basketball opener at Siuslaw, 44-17.
The Oregon School Activities Association executive board yesterday reportedly approved an addition to the Far West League beginning next fall. Marshfield High School has an enrollment of about 770 in grades nine through twelve; 100 less than the cutoff between 4A and 5A.
Mapleton basketball standout Brody Ford is Coast Radio Sports Athlete of the Week. The Sailor junior led scoring with a combined 37 points and 16 rebounds to lead Mapleton to a two-and-oh start. Honorable mention goes to Siuslaw forward Ryan Smith who put in a tough defensive game in the second half against Marshfield to help the Vikings to a win in their first game of the season.
