PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Justin Hawkins had 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers in a second-half rally that put No. 21 UNLV in front, and the Runnin’ Rebels defeated tenacious Portland 68-60 last night. Playing their first game on the road this season, the Runnin’ Rebels were without top rebounder Mike Moser, who sat out with a hip injury. Anthony Bennett had 18 points and Anthony Marshall added 16 for UNLV. Ryan Nicholas had 15 points and 19 rebounds for the Pilots, who led 28-22 at halftime.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – A Utah State basketball player from Oregon who collapsed at practice and stopped breathing has been hospitalized in critical condition. Intermountain Medical Center spokesman Jess Gomez said yesterday that Danny Berger was in critical condition at the hospital in Murray, Utah. A university spokesman says emergency responders used a defibrillator to get Berger breathing again during practice. Berger, a junior from Medford, Ore., is a starting forward for the Utah State Aggies.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – The Seattle Seahawks have cut wide receiver Braylon Edwards after a season during which he had little impact on the offense. He was waived with an injury distinction, but no specific injury was cited. Seattle now has five healthy wide receivers. Edwards had eight catches for 74 yards and one TD in 10 games. The team also placed starting left guard James Carpenter on season-ending reserve/non-football illness. Offensive lineman Rishaw Johnson was signed from the practice squad.
