GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – A 33-mile stretch of Interstate 5 in southern Oregon reopened last night after a sudden dump of snow caused a seven-hour closure, stranding untold numbers of ill-prepared motorists. The highway was closed between Canyonville and Hugo in an area of steep mountain passes. ODOT said the closure was one of a number of weather-related problems across the state due to stormy weather.
FORKS, Wash. (AP) – A team of tsunami debris experts is making another attempt today to reach a dock that washed ashore on a remote beach on the Washington coast. The site on the Olympic Peninsula near Forks is about five miles from the nearest road. A swollen stream yesterday blocked a team from the state Marine Debris Task Force. The dock appears similar to one that washed ashore last June at Newport. It was confirmed as tsunami debris.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland voters will decide in May whether to add fluoride to the city’s drinking water. The Portland City Council voted 3-1 yesterday to move up the date of a public referendum that had been set for May 2014. Supporters of the action said it’s important to have the issue settled quickly because Portland children, particularly those from low-income families, have high rates of tooth decay.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Oregon coach Chip Kelly says the Ducks have cooperated fully with the NCAA investigation into the school’s use of recruiting services, and he isn’t particularly surprised that the process has taken so long. He also says that no potential recruits have mentioned the probe. Kelly spoke after Yahoo Sports reported that Oregon is likely headed toward a hearing with the NCAA committee on possible infractions because the two sides couldn’t come to an agreement on appropriate sanctions.
