GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) – DeAnthony Thomas returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for the first of his two touchdowns, Marcus Mariota accounted for three scores, and No. 5 Oregon raced past No. 7 Kansas State 35-17 at the Fiesta Bowl last night. Oregon jumped out to a 15-0 lead behind Thomas’ opening return and 23-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. Kansas State tried to bull its way behind Heisman Trophy finalist Collin Klein, only to get overwhelmed by the speedy Ducks, who finished 12-1.

MALIBU, Calif. (AP) – Elias Harris scored 18 points and Kelly Olynyk had 16 to lead No. 10 Gonzaga to a 78-62 victory over Pepperdine last night in the a West Coast Conference opener for both teams. Olynyk scored 14 points in the second half as the Bulldogs won despite shooting a season-low 43.4 percent from the field. Reserve guard David Stockton added nine points and four steals and Kevin Pangos scored nine points. Lorne Jackson led the Waves with 16 points and Jordan Baker had 15.

SAN DIEGO (AP) – Chris Anderson scored 14 points to lead San Diego over Portland 61-50 last night in the Western Conference opener for both teams. Anderson was 4 of 8 from the field. Ken Rancifer added 10 points for the Toreros. Chris Manresa had nine points and 11 rebounds. The score was tied at 27 at halftime in the game with eight lead changes. San Diego shot 40.8 percent from the field for the game, while Portland shot 35 percent. Thomas van der Mars led Portland with 12 points.

BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) – Flavien Davis scored 16 points and Christian Moon added 15 as Montana State withstood two second-half comebacks from Portland State to hold on for a 62-59 win last night. Paul Egwuonwu added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Bobcats. Aaron Moore had 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Vikings. Lateef McMullan also had 17 points. Montana State led 52-38 with 7:35 remaining when Portland State went on a 15-1 run to tie the game at 53-53 with 3:05 to go.

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) – Jordan Gregory hit four 3-pointers and scored 17 points last night, helping Montana stay unbeaten in Big Sky Conference play with an 81-66 victory over Eastern Washington. Gregory was 6 of 7 from the field, including 4 of 5 from behind the arc. Spencer Coleman added 15 points off the bench for the Grizzlies, and Mathias Ward scored 12. Montana’s Will Cherry was 0 of 7 from the field but scored eight points on free throws, leaving him two points away from moving into 12th place on the school’s career scoring list.

LOGAN, Utah (AP) – Kyisean Reed scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Utah State in a 75-66 victory over Seattle last night. Utah State capitalized on Seattle’s inability to take care of the basketball, scoring 26 points on 18 Redhawk turnovers. The Aggies were 19 of 23 from the free-throw line and held off Seattle despite the Redhawks hitting 10 3-pointers and shooting 46.4 percent from the field in the game. Preston Medlin scored 18 points and had five assists for Utah State.
