PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) – Mike Trout singled in his first at-bat this spring and scored twice for the Los Angeles Angels in a 9-8 loss to the Seattle Mariners. The 20-year-old Trout, the AL Rookie of the Year and runner-up in the MVP voting last season, also walked. Brendan Ryan homered for the Mariners and Justin Smoak doubled and singled. Seattle rallied for seven runs in the final three innings. Jeremy Bonderman, trying to secure a spot in Seattle’s rotation, allowed two hits and a walk in his lone inning.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Trail Blazers guard Wesley Matthews sees only one option left after trying all the treatments he can on his sore left leg: prayer. Matthews hurt his leg and ankle, along with his left elbow, just before the All-Star break. But he’s playing, and praying, through pain, hoping to help push Portland into the playoffs. The Blazers are four games back of Houston for the West’s eighth and final playoff spot. The Lakers are 2½ games out. He’s averaging 15 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists.
(AP) – Indiana is No. 1 in The Associated Press’ Top 25 for the fourth straight week, while Gonzaga moved to No. 2 for the first time in school history. While the West Coast Bulldogs made some news at the top of the poll Monday, Louisiana Tech, the Bulldogs from Down South, moved into the rankings for the first time since a 13-week run in 1984-85, their only appearance in the poll. Louisiana Tech, which is 25th this week, was led back then to a ranking as high as No. 7 by a forward named Karl Malone.
