SEATTLE (AP) – Longshoremen are still standing in the path of investor Chris Hansen and supporters who want to build an arena for NBA basketball near the Seattle waterfront. Officials with International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 19 held a news conference yesterday to announce an appeal of a Feb. 22 King County Superior Court decision that went against the union. They union says a memorandum of understanding between Hansen and the city and King County violates state environmental law.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – Ty Lawson had 24 points and Danilo Gallinari added 23 for the Denver Nuggets as they won their sixth straight game, defeating the would-be Seattle Sonics 120-113 last night. The deep and talented Nuggets used a 36-point third quarter to build a lead against the Sacramento Kings that they never relinquished in winning their season-best third straight road game. They scored 70 second-half points when they shot nearly 64 percent. The streaking Nuggets have won seven of eight.
MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) – The University of Montana’s Athletic Conduct Team has reinstated Eugene, Ore., native Jordan Johnson to the football team after hearing his appeal on Monday. The university said in a news release Tuesday morning that UM President Royce Engstrom also approved the quarterback’s reinstatement. Johnson, of Eugene, Ore., appealed his suspension from the team over the weekend. He was acquitted Friday of sexual intercourse without consent. Spring drills begin on March 18.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland Timbers midfielder Sal Zizzo will be sidelined four to six weeks following surgery on his left knee. Zizzo tore the medial meniscus during practice Monday and was operated on by Dr. Richard Edelson in Tigard. The 25-year-old, in his third season with Portland, has one goal in 51 games. Portland announced the injury yesterday.
ROHN, Alaska (AP) – Imagine standing on a sled behind a team of 16 dogs, traveling mile after desolate mile in the Alaska wilderness. All of a sudden, lights shine off in the distance. It’s a village, the first to come into view in a very long time. For mushers on the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, the 26 checkpoints between Anchorage and Nome offer a chance to rest and recharge. They are also a chance to interact with someone other than the dogs. Paul Gebhardt’s team is now in the lead in the 1,000-mile race.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) – Scott Gomez and Adam Burish ended long goal droughts and Joe Pavelski scored the shootout winner as the San Jose Sharks defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 last night. Brad Stuart added two assists and Antti Niemi (AN’-tee nee-YEH’-mee) made 36 saves for San Jose, which won its second straight game after a stretch in which it went 2-6-4. Henrik Sedin (seh-DEEN’) and Jannik Hansen scored for Vancouver, which dropped to 3-5-2 in its past 10 games.
