BEND, Ore. (AP) – Bend police are investigating string of seven suspicious fires that broke out within a three- to four-block area early yesterday. One fire damaged the historic Trinity Episcopal Church. No one was injured, but additional fire crews had to be called in from around central Oregon to help fight the blazes.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A grand jury has found no criminal wrongdoing by Portland police in the Feb. 17 fatal shooting of a federal fugitive. Police say the thought Merle Hatch was armed, but he was carrying a broken telephone receiver handle when he charged at officers at Portland Adventist Medical Center.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A 38-year-old Sweet Home woman is facing a 10-year prison sentence for a drunken driving crash that killed another driver in November near Lowell. The Register-Guard reports Traci Lynn Akers pleaded guilty yesterday to second-degree manslaughter and other charges in the death of 46-year-old Lori Jean McNamara of Westfir.

NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) – A northern sea otter that was a favorite of staff at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport has been euthanized. A spokesman says 14-year-old Aialik (Aye-AL-ick) had stopped eating as his health deteriorated. Aialik underwent surgery in 2011 for urinary tract problems.
