PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland Timbers played New England to a scoreless draw last night to extend their unbeaten streak to seven games. It is the longest streak without a loss for the Timbers since the team joined Major League Soccer in 2011. Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth had eight saves as Portland dominated possession. Donovan Ricketts had four saves.
SEATTLE (AP) – Minor-league manager Daren Brown has been added to the Seattle Mariners coaching staff. Earlier this week, third-base coach Jeff Datz said he’d been diagnosed with cancer and could be missing time as he seeks treatment options. The Mariners say Brown will be an extra coach and fill-in coach at third when Datz is away. John Stearns will take over in Tacoma.
RENO, Nev. (AP) – Nevada pitcher Braden Shipley has been named to a watch list of the top amateur baseball players in the country. USA Baseball listed the junior right-hander yesterday among 60 candidates for its annual Golden Spikes Award. School officials say the Medford, Ore., native’s fastball has been clocked at 99 mph. He’s struck out 76 hitters in 80 innings this season.
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) – The Chicago Bears agreed to four-year contracts with two more draft picks in linebacker Khaseem Greene and receiver Marquess Wilson. A day earlier, offensive tackle Jordan Mills and defensive end Cornelius Washington reached agreements. Wilson, taken in the seventh round, set Washington State’s career receiving record with 3,207 yards.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa men’s basketball team has ditched Alaska in favor of the Bahamas. The Hawkeyes announced yesterday that they’ve pulled out of the Great Alaska Shootout and will instead play in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament on Paradise Island in the Bahamas from Nov. 28-30. The move should add strength to Iowa’s non-conference schedule.
