PITTSBURGH (AP) – Jeanmar Gomez pitched five shutout innings while making a surprise spot start and the Pittsburgh Pirates downed the Seattle Mariners 4-1 last night. Andrew McCutchen went 4 for 4 with an RBI-double and Garrett Jones hit a two-run homer in the eighth to pad the lead. Raul Ibanez provided a pinch-hit RBI-double in the seventh to pull Seattle within a run.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) – The Jacksonville Jaguars continue to revamp their secondary, signing free agent cornerback Marcus Trufant and reuniting him with coach Gus Bradley. The team released veteran cornerback Antwaun Molden to make room for the former Seattle Seahawks starter. Trufant played for four seasons under Bradley, the ex-Seahawks defensive coordinator.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – John Kasay, who ranks among the NFL all-time leaders in field goals and scoring, is retiring with Carolina. Kasay, who spent 15 seasons with Carolina, signed a one-day contract with the Panthers yesterday so he could retire as part of the team. Kasay’s 20th and final NFL season was with New Orleans in 2011. Kasay began his career with Seattle in 1991.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – The University of Alaska Anchorage has reopened the hiring process for a new hockey coach. The university says a second hiring panel will consider new applicants for the job that became open when UAA fired Dave Shyiak. UAA had interviewed four finalists before alumni and supporters issued votes of no-confidence in athletic director Dr. Steve Cobb.
