Phil Hughes took a shutout into the eighth. New York matched its season high for runs scored in an inning, tagging Seattle starter Aaron Harang for eight hits in the third before being shut down the rest of the night.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Clemson junior Brianna Rollins set a collegiate record in the 100-meter hurdles yesterday with a time of 12.47 seconds at the NCAA track and field championships. Rollins set the wind-legal mark in her heat of the semifinals at Oregon’s Hayward Field. The final in the event is set for tomorrow.
SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners have selected New Mexico third baseman D.J. Peterson with the No. 12 overall pick of the amateur baseball draft. His batting average was ranked fourth in the NCAA and tied for the third-most homers hit in the country. Peterson was previously drafted by the Mariners, taken in the 30th round in 2010, but did not sign.
SEATTLE (AP) – Right-hander Hector Noesi was optioned by the Seattle Mariners to Triple-A Tacoma and the team recalled right-hander Blake Beavan. Seattle made the roster moves to help out its bullpen yesterday before opening a four-game series against the New York Yankees. Beavan started the season in the Mariners rotation but was optioned to Tacoma on May 1.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Alysha Clark of the WNBA’s Seattle Storm has been hired as an assistant coach for Middle Tennessee and will join her alma mater when the league’s season ends. Middle Tennessee coach Rick Insell announced the hiring yesterday. Clark has played professionally the past four years and signed with Seattle in March 2012.
