SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The state Legislature has voted to allow veterans nationwide to pay in-state tuition at Oregon’s public universities. The House unanimously backed the measure on yesterday and Gov. John Kitzhaber is expected to sign it. Lawmakers say veterans who move to Oregon after leaving the military end up paying thousands of dollars out of pocket.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Senate has rejected a Republican effort to expand the tax guarantee that the state gave Nike last year to more companies. Senators rejected the effort in a party-line vote yesterday. Lawmakers last year voted to permit Nike to continue calculating its state tax bill based on the current formula, known as the single sales factor, even if the state changes the formula in the future.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Former University of Portland soccer star Joey Leonetti has been arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl he coached. The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office says the 43-year-old Leonetti was arrested at his Oregon City home yesterday and booked into the county jail on charges of first-degree sexual abuse. Investigators say the alleged abuse happened in 2012.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Like a scene out of TV’s “Portlandia,” a Portland arboretum is calling all tree huggers for an organized attempt to set a world record for simultaneous tree hugging. KGW-TV says the arboretum wants participants to pre-register for the July 20 hug-in to comply with Guinness World Records rules. Portland organizers are aiming to gather 1,200 tree huggers.
