SEATTLE (AP) – The Houston Astros rallied to score six runs off closer Tom Wilhelmsen in the ninth inning and beat the Seattle Mariners 6-1 last night. Trailing 1-0, Jason Castro and J.D. Martinez led off with a pair of singles and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Carlos Corporan. After an intentional walk of Carlos Pena, Chris Carter doubled off the wall in left field to score a pair and give the Astros their first lead of the game.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland Timbers beat the Tampa Bay Rowdies 2-0 last night to reach the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open Cup. Michael Nanchoff scored in the ninth minute on a nifty left-footed volley into the right corner. Jack Jewsbury scored on a left-foot blast in the 55th. The Timbers will play at FC Dallas in the quarterfinals June 26.
STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) – Mississippi State, which is making its first appearance at the College World Series since 2007, will face No. 3 national seed Oregon State on Saturday in Omaha, Neb. It’s taken just five years for John Cohen to revitalize Mississippi State’s baseball program and return the Bulldogs to championship contention. Junior outfielder Hunter Renfroe leads the offense with a .360 batting average, 15 homers and 61 RBIs.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Fed up with fans interrupting the College World Series games by running onto the field, officials are warning of full prosecution for anyone who pulls such a stunt. Omaha city prosecutor David Smalheiser (SMALL-hy-zer) said yesterday trespassers could face six months in jail and a $500 fine.
BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) – The United States’ 2-0 victory over Panama on Tuesday night was ESPN’s second most-watched and second highest-rated World Cup qualifying or international friendly game telecast. ESPN said Wednesday that the game in Seattle was seen by an average 1.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media.
