PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The chairman of the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners, Jeff Cogen, said yesterday he had a year-and-a-half affair with a county employee. The Oregonian reports he admitted the extramarital affair after an anonymous email alleged that a promotion was due in part to her involvement with him. Cogen denied that. He said he regretted the affair and recognizes it was wrong.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police say a man fell to his death from the Vista Bridge just weeks before the span is to get temporary barriers to prevent suicide. Sgt. Pete Simpson says officers responded to the scene less than hour before sunrise yesterday. The Oregon State Medical Examiner will try to identify the man. He is the fourth person this year to die at the span known as “The Suicide Bridge.”
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A dog that strained at the leash and then ran to the sound of people playing and splashing in the water at a Columbia Gorge waterfall died when he slipped over an 80-foot cliff. Volunteers rappelled down yesterday to find the body of Maxwell Smart, an 18-month-old Labradoodle that weighed 85 pounds.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Twenty-four Oregon State Police recruits will be sworn in Sunday in Salem, beginning 26 weeks of training based at the state Public Safety Academy. The Statesman Journal reports the 18 men and six women range in age from 22 to 49, with an average age of 31. Six have law enforcement experience and four served in the military. Half of the group has a bachelor’s or associate degree.
