PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland police say an 84-year-old man with Alzheimer’s disease who was reported missing with his wife’s car has been killed in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 near Olympia, Wash. Sgt. Pete Simpson says Ted Reich was killed Tuesday afternoon, hours after the man’s wife discovered him missing. Relatives thought he might have been headed to the Portland Yacht Club, a gym or a pub.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Firefighters report “significant progress” on a wildfire in Central Oregon, while fire managers looked farther eastward to the potential for wildfires from more than 800 lightning strikes. Fire officials say crews have drawn lines around the Box Springs fire northeast of Prineville and consider it 50 percent contained.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Nine fires in the past year-and-a-half in Portland have been caused by patients who continue to smoke while receiving extra oxygen at home. A Portland Fire Bureau lieutenant and Oregon Burn Center surgeon got together yesterday to say the fires are preventable. Lt. Rich Tyler and Dr. Joseph Pulito say smokers put themselves, their families and their homes at risk if they don’t stop smoking while receiving pure oxygen.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – State officials say that unemployment benefits for about 61,000 Oregonians delayed by a computer crash are expected to be paid a day late. The state Employment Department says people who filed claims on Sunday should see them deposited today, a day after they would have arrived. The delayed payments were among the disruptions cause by an overnight failure at the State Data Center.
