OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) – The Clackamas County sheriff’s office is resuming the search today for a rafter missing on the Clackamas River. A friend reported Brighton Schmidt of Vancouver missing last night when they failed to meet up at Carver Park. Deputies say Schmidt was last seen walking through a shallow finger of the river with a partially deflated float tube. He was not wearing a life jacket and was reported to be intoxicated.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – The Deschutes County sheriff’s office says 62-year-old Wesley Pierson of Redmond man has died on a mountain bike ride. Deputies responded to a call for help Saturday afternoon from the Lava-Edison trail near Little Lava Lake. Witnesses gave the man CPR and paramedics began advanced life-saving efforts when they arrived. But he could not be revived.
MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Department of Forestry has spent more than $70 million fighting major wildfires so far this summer. The two largest wildfires in Southern Oregon – the Big Windy and Douglas Complex fires – are responsible for almost $60 million of that total. The Mail Tribune reports that the agency usually spends between $3 million and $7 million on firefighting each summer.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon’s nurseries depend on construction of homes and commercial buildings, so they took a battering in the housing bust and recession. But Oregon Association of Nurseries chief Jeff Stone says the nurseries that survived have begun to rebound. Stone tells the Salem agricultural publication Capital Press that among the indications of recovery are some shortages of plant materials – suggesting buyers are purchasing in greater bulk and with more confidence.
