SEATTLE (AP) – Jonathan Villar’s two-run single highlighted a four-run ninth inning as the Houston Astros rallied to beat the Seattle Mariners 6-4 last night in front of the smallest crowd in Safeco Field history. Abraham Almonte hit his first major league homer, a two-run shot in the seventh inning, to give the Mariners a 3-2 lead. Seattle reliever Charlie Furbush got out of a jam in the eighth, but in the ninth the Astros broke through.
SEATTLE (AP) – Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez will not make his scheduled start tomorrow, the second time his turn in the rotation has been pushed back. The team confirmed yesterday that Hernandez will not start against Houston. He had been set to start last Sunday against Tampa Bay, but had that start pushed back due to stiffness in his back.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Pete Carroll is acknowledging how fortunate the Seattle Seahawks were to get out of Carolina with a victory, knowing that a year ago that same performance would have likely been a loss. The Seahawks were able to find plenty of mistakes when they looked back at Sunday’s 12-7 win over Carolina, highlighted by a running game that managed 70 yards. Seattle could get more help before its Sunday night game with NFC West rival San Francisco. Defensive end Cliff Avril may play.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Tennessee coach Butch Jones understands the importance of forcing No. 2 Oregon’s offense to rely on long drives instead of quick strikes. He also realizes that’s easier said than done. The Ducks head into Saturday’s game with Tennessee averaging 62.5 points per game this season after ranking second nationally with 49.5 points per game last year. The average length of Oregon’s 17 touchdowns has been 22.9 yards.
SEATTLE (AP) – A Washington appeals court says tentative plans for a new professional basketball and hockey arena in Seattle do not violate state environmental law. Investor Chris Hansen has been trying to build a $490 million arena to draw the NBA and NHL to Seattle. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union sued, saying traffic congestion from basketball and hockey games would kill jobs because it would interfere with container shipping and related businesses nearby.
TORONTO (AP) – Toronto FC has traded forward Maximiliano Urruti to the Portland Timbers for forward Bright Dike, a first-round draft choice in 2015 and allocation money. Toronto also sent an international roster spot in the deal. The Urruti trade could be the first of other moves for Toronto FC. Some could happen this week before MLS rosters are frozen Friday at 5 p.m.
