DETROIT (AP) – Miguel Cabrera homered, Austin Jackson hit a two-run single and the Detroit Tigers held on despite a short-handed bullpen, beating the Seattle Mariners 6-2 last night. The AL Central-leading Tigers were ahead 3-2 when they escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth while playing without closer Joaquin Benoit and left-handed reliever Drew Smyly. They were both given the night off. Anibal Sanchez struck out 10 in 6 1-3 innings, but the Mariners tied it at 2 against him in the seventh.
NEW YORK (AP) – Seattle Mariners pitcher Forrest Snow has been suspended for 50 games following a second positive test for a drug of abuse under baseball’s minor league program. The 24-year-old right-hander’s suspension was announced yesterday and will begin next season. Snow was 4-0 with a 2.93 ERA in one start and 18 relief appearances this year for Triple-A Tacoma of the Pacific Coast League. He’s 1-5 with a 3.00 ERA in one start and 22 relief outings for the Southern League’s Double-A Jackson.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Oregon coach Mark Helfrich and tight end Colt Lyerla have patched things up after a report that the tight end was upset with how his stomach flu last weekend was described as “circumstances.” Lyerla missed Saturday’s 59-14 victory over Tennessee after he had been out for much of the previous week with a virus. As a policy, Oregon coaches don’t discuss injuries. After the game, Helfrich said Lyerla missed the game because of “circumstances.” Reached later at home by The Oregonian, Lyerla said he felt that description could be unfairly interpreted. Lyerla apologized after practice Monday.
