SEATTLE (AP) – Alex Gordon threw out a runner at the plate in extra innings and scored on Salvador Perez’s two-out double in the 12th to lift the Kansas City Royals over the Seattle Mariners 6-5 last night. Kansas City moved within three games of idle Cleveland for the second AL wild card with six remaining. Texas is a game behind the Indians. Gordon saved the Royals in the 10th inning, when his one-hop throw to Perez from left field cut down Kyle Seager for an inning-ending double play.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – It all went just about perfect for Pete Carroll and the Seattle Seahawks. They avoided looking past lowly Jacksonville and turned in an impressive 45-17 rout Sunday. Seattle didn’t come away healthy. Defensive end Red Bryant left the game with back spasms and was sore yesterday, but Carroll believes he’ll be fine in a few days. Jermaine Kearse suffered a sprained ankle, but was no longer in a walking boot yesterday, and right tackle Breno Giacomini had a sore knee.
HOUSTON (AP) – For the second straight week, the Houston Texans have a watchful eye on star wide receiver Andre Johnson. Coach Gary Kubiak says Johnson suffered a shin bruise in the first half of Sunday’s 30-9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Johnson was examined yesterday morning and Kubiak says he is day-to-day. The Seattle Seahawks visit Houston on Sunday.
SEATTLE (AP) – Washington’s electric start to the season and an offense that’s among the best in the country are about to get a test that will help determine whether the Huskies are for real. A Pac-12 Conference slate that starts with four difficult games against Arizona, at Stanford, vs. Oregon and Arizona State should be telling. Washington moved up to No. 16 in this week’s AP Top 25.
