SEATTLE (AP) – Hisashi Iwakuma pitched eight scoreless innings and Mike Zunino homered twice to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 6-0 win against Kansas City, ending the Royals’ playoff hopes last night. The Royals entered yesterday four games behind Cleveland for the second wild-card berth with five games to play. All three teams ahead of Kansas City in the wild-card hunt – Tampa Bay, Cleveland and Texas – won on Wednesday, and the Royals needed a victory to keep their slim hopes alive.
SEATTLE (AP) – Seattle Mariners manger Eric Wedge says he feels like he’s “hanging out there” with little clarity regarding his future with the organization. Wedge spoke before yesterday’s game against Kansas City, his first comments about his job status. Wedge’s contract – originally a three-year deal – expires after the season and Wedge indicated he’s been given no word about whether he’ll return for a fourth year.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – The workout took place at the Seattle Seahawks facility and was the same type of testing any would-be free agent looking to join the club would go through. Yet, this wasn’t a free agent being examined. It was Chris Clemons undergoing scrutiny to see if the Seahawks’ sack leader for the last three seasons would be ready to return from a torn ACL in his left knee early in the 2013 season, or if Seattle needed to be more patient. The answer: He’ll be back sooner rather than later.
CASHIERS, N.C. (AP) – Former PGA Tour player Buzz Fly beat Patrick Tallent 5 and 3 yesterday to advance to the semifinals in the rain- and fog-delayed USGA Senior Amateur. Fly, a 58-year-old reinstated amateur from Memphis, Tenn., will face Pat O’Donnell this morning at Wade Hampton Golf Club. The 59-year-old O’Donnell, from Happy Valley, Ore., beat David Szewczul 5 and 4.
