PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Chris Brown threw two touchdown passes to help Cal Poly score 24 straight second-half points and the Mustangs beat Portland State 38-34 last night in the Big Sky opener for both teams. Brown was 6 of 18 for 87 yards and ran for 129 yards on 21 carries. Big Sky rushing leader Kristaan Ivory ran for 184 yards and a touchdown in 32 attempts for the Mustangs. Kieran McDonagh was 16 of 32 for 302 yards and four touchdowns, and D.J. Adams led the Vikings in rushing with 126 yards on 25 carries.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Trying to keep J.J. Watt from wreaking havoc in the backfield is a tall task for even the best offensive lines. The Seattle Seahawks may have to attempt it this week without their two starting offensive tackles. Pro Bowl left tackle Russell Okung is out with an injured toe. Right tackle Breno Giacomini has an ailing knee that forced him to the sidelines early in Seattle’s 45-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. The Seahawks are at Houston to face the Texans Sunday.
RENTON, Wash. (AP) – Russell Wilson brought along a gift to his weekly media session that the Seattle Seahawks quarterback received earlier this week from a young hospital patient. Wilson on Thursday showed off a Seattle Seahawks wallet made from duct tape by an 11-year-old patient named Allison at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Wilson says, “It’s like perfect.” Since arriving in Seattle, Wilson has regularly visited patients at the hospital on Tuesdays – the Seahawks’ day off – during the season.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – If Cal quarterback Jared Goff has any jitters about his first start on the road, he sure isn’t showing it. Goff was cool about playing No. 2 Oregon in what is sure to be a raucous atmosphere at Autzen Stadium tomorrow night, calling it just another game. The freshman quarterback is having a sensational start to his college career, steering first-year Cal coach Sonny Dykes’ “Bear Raid” offense. On the other side will be Marcus Mariota, who is generating Heisman Trophy buzz this season.
