SAN ANTONIO (AP) – Quarterback Marcus Mariota had 386 total yards and No. 10 Oregon returned two interceptions for touchdowns, spoiling Texas coach Mack Brown’s farewell with a runaway 30-7 victory in the Alamo Bowl last night. The BCS-snubbed Ducks dominated throughout even though their famously high-powered offense scored just one touchdown, when Josh Huff turned a short pass from Mariota into a spectacular 16-yard sprint to the end zone.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Tyreke Evans hit a pull-up jumper from 17 feet with 1.2 seconds left and the New Orleans Pelicans beat the Portland Trail Blazers 110-108 last night. Evans’ big basket came right after Portland’s Damian Lillard made a contested 3-pointer to tie the score at 108. New Orleans never trailed in the second half but never led by more than five in the final 10 minutes.
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) – Drew Barham scored 15 points, all on 3-pointers, as short-handed No. 24 Gonzaga beat San Francisco 69-41 last night. Przemek Karnowski added 11 points for Gonzaga, whose top three scorers are battling injuries. David Stockton and Kevin Pangos finished with 10 points each. Gonzaga played without starting guard Gary Bell Jr., who has a broken hand, and starting forward Sam Dower, who has an injured back.
SEATTLE (AP) – Alan Williams tallied 27 points and UC Santa Barbara made 34-of-39 free throws in defeating Seattle University 86-70 last night. It took USCB three minutes to score in the first half before igniting a 20-5 run leading in to the break. Seattle started almost as poorly, but failed to respond as UCSB built a 15 point edge, leading 32-17 at halftime. Santa Barbara coasted to an easy 16 point win.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Evan Roquemore, Brandon Clark and Jared Brownridge each scored 20 for Santa Clara in a 76-68 victory at Portland yesterday. Santa Clara scored 12 straight points to build a 52-37 lead with 13:17 left in the game. Portland later answered with a 9-0 run to close the gap to 55-52 and Thomas van der Mars’ three-point play kept them within 58-55. But Santa Clara answered with a 10-3 run and made eight free throws in the final 2 minutes.
