Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland Fire and Rescue says firefighters and police officers moved a damaged car and its trapped driver off railroad tracks as a train approached last night. Three firefighters and two police officers shifted the four-door sedan off the tracks far enough that a train would not hit it. Hydraulic cutters were used to cut the damaged metal and free the male driver who has non-life-threatening injuries.
PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – A Marine Corps deserter appears in court in Pendleton today to change his pleas on charges he stabbed to death a motel maid and severely beat a woman on a jogging path. Lukah Chang was arrested last August after police recognized him from surveillance video from the jogging path. The stabbing death of the motel maid had stymied police for a year until DNA evidence linked Chang to both crimes.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Analysts say tolls could generate enough revenue to finance construction of a new Interstate 5 bridge across the Columbia River at Portland. They estimate tolls would generate about $80 million a year. Oregon needs enough toll revenue to repay both a $900 million federal loan and the $450 million the state intends to borrow.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – DeMarcus Cousins had 35 points and 13 rebounds and the Sacramento Kings held off a furious rally to beat the Portland Trail Blazers 123-119 last night. A 32-12 run at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarters put Sacramento ahead by 19 points. Damian Lillard scored 26 of his 41 points in the final period to pull Portland within two in the final minute. But the Kings made enough free throws to hold on.
