LINCOLN CITY, Ore. (AP) – A new trial date has been set for the driver accused of killing a man as he dribbled a soccer ball along Highway 101 at Lincoln City on the way from Seattle to Brazil. KGW reports the second trial for Scott Von Hiatt of Neskowin is set for July 8. His first trial ended in a hung jury. Richard Swanson was struck from behind by a pickup truck while dribbling a soccer ball to Brazil to raise awareness for the One World Futbol charity.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The days of a Eugene homeless camp called Whoville appear to be numbered. The City Council has voted to back the city manager’s plan to start closing the camp by April. The Register-Guard reports the council also voted to create a smaller camp called a rest stop that could accommodate about 15 of the 40 Whoville residents.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The head of Bonneville Power Administration has named two new officers in the wake of a hiring scandal at the power-marketing agency. Administrator Elliot Mainzer announced that Greg Delwiche will serve as BPA’s deputy administrator and Claudia Andrews will take on the role of chief operating officer.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Zoo elephants have started spending time in a portion of their new exhibit. The Oregonian reports construction crews finished the first section of the $57 million project last week. The 6-acre Elephant Lands exhibit should be completed by the fall of 2015. It’s four times larger than the old elephant quarters.
