EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – A Lane County jury recommended the death penalty for David Ray Taylor for his role in a Eugene murder.
The jury reached it decision Thursday for the 58-year-old Eugene man who was convicted last week in the 2012 murder of Celestino Gutierrez. Prosecutors say he was killed so his car could be used in a bank robbery.
Taylor will be officially sentenced Tuesday and join 33 other men and one woman on Oregon’s death row.
The Register-Guard reports (http://bit.ly/1lHZxNw ) Gutierrez’s family said it wished his execution could be carried out without delay.
Just two inmates have been executed since Oregon voters reinstated capital punishment in 1984. The state’s last execution was in 1997.
Gov. John Kitzhaber has placed a moratorium on executions during his time in office.
