Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
ALMA, Mich. (AP) – Police in Oregon are making another try at solving the deaths of two farmworkers in an arson fire that destroyed a cheap hotel 39 years ago, circulating a photo of a man who claimed to have Michigan ties and who fled after being questioned. Salem police investigator say the man disappeared without a trace after police interviewed him in 1975. It followed a fire at the Bligh Hotel that killed 49-year-old residents Arnold Stover and August Cico (CHEE’-koe).
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A recent change in the winds could signal the end to a spike in marine trash on Oregon and Washington beaches. Researchers at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say an annual transition from wet winter lows to dry summer highs has brought the warmer, northwesterly winds that push debris-laden surface water back out to sea.
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – A new study suggests steelhead trout can have trouble using the Earth’s magnetic field to navigate if they were raised in a hatchery, where the field may be distorted by iron pipes. The lead author says the results may explain why so many hatchery fish stray from their native rivers and have a lower rate of ocean survival than wild fish.
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) – Drought is again gripping the high-desert Klamath Basin, and the holders of water rights are submitting claims for surface water. It’s the second year that the basin has been subject to a new state-level determination of how water gets allocated, based on the age of the claims.
