SUTHERLIN, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say a 51-year-old woman has been struck and killed in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 in southern Oregon. Troopers say a commercial truck pulling a trailer was in the right lane in Sutherlin when the pedestrian began to run from the right shoulder toward the center median and was hit by the trailer’s rear wheels. The woman’s name is expected to be released today.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Corrections officials say an Eastern Oregon prison that’s been plagued by inmate fights in the past week is slowly returning to normal. Regular visiting hours are expected to resume today at Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution, a medium-security prison at Pendleton. The Oregonian reports that 90 inmates who played roles in at least three big fights have been locked in disciplinary segregation.
JUNCTION CITY, Ore. (AP) – A company that makes puffed corn snacks plans to build a 135,000-square-foot factory in Junction City that over several years could hire as many as 150 workers. The Register-Guard reports that Cosmos Creations is firming up financing and hopes to have the $4 million steel-frame building completed by year’s end.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon Zoo officials in Portland say tuberculosis test results for a third zoo elephant are puzzling and they plan additional tests. The Oregonian reports that results of a March trunk culture taken from 44-year-old Tusko showed the presence of an organism known to cause TB. A follow-up test showed Tusko had not produced the antibodies that indicate TB. Two other bull elephants were diagnosed with TB last year. Zoo vets say the elephants are being treated and have not shown any signs of illness.
