WASHINGTON (AP) – The Supreme Court has declined to block any new same-sex unions in Oregon while a federal appeals court considers whether an anti-gay marriage group can intervene in the case. The decision follows an emergency appeal by the National Organization for Marriage seeking to defend the same-sex marriage ban.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon voters won’t be deciding this year whether to privatize liquor sales. Grocers said today they’re withdrawing proposed ballot initiatives that would have asked voters in November to end the state’s monopoly on selling alcohol. Critics say it’s welcome news. But initiative supporters plan to continue their efforts through the Legislature or the 2016 ballot.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Planned Parenthood says it is closing three clinics in the Portland area: in Clackamas, Gresham and Clark County, Washington. Two months ago, it closed an office in McMinnville. The Oregonian reports the closures come as teen birth rates both in Oregon and nationally are at their lowest point in decades.
GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – Biologists say Oregon’s famous wandering wolf has fathered pups with a mate in the southern Cascade Range – the first confirmed wolf pack in those mountains since the 1940s. The wolf known as OR-7 set off in search of a mate in September 2011, covering thousands of miles from his birthplace in Oregon to Northern California and back.
