PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The anonymous donor that gave $100 million to Oregon Health & Science University last month has been revealed to be Columbia Sportswear’s chairwoman Gert Boyle, and the donation was made to honor her late sister. The Oregonian reports that Boyle’s $100 million brings the university $70 million closer to triggering Phil and Penny Knight’s matching $500 million donation that the Nike co-founder promised a year ago. The Knight Cancer Challenge is intended to make the university’s Knight Cancer Institute among the top cancer research facilities in the country.
ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) – A Seattle man has been found guilty of second-degree manslaughter after driving a car that crossed a center line and crashed head-on against another vehicle, killing two Seaside residents. The Daily Astorian reports that 40-year-old Sterling Maxwell Frinell was driving under the influence of methamphetamine, opiates and oxycodone when he crashed his Subaru into the Volkswagen Beetle that 52-year-old Mark Agalzoff and 20-year-old Tryg Walker McCord were riding.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A woman was fatally shot at her home in Silverton on Saturday, and the man suspected of killing her appeared on Sunday at a hospital with serious injuries. The Statesman Journal reports yesterday that the slain woman was identified as 50-year-old Cassandra K. Wagner. The main suspect was identified as Jason Clifford Down, who Wagner had gotten a restraining order against in July. He was arrested in early August for violating the restraining order.
GOLD BEACH, Ore. (AP) – The treasurer of the Gold Beach Senior Center surrendered to authorities at the Curry County Jail after she was indicted on charges that she stole money from the organization. The World newspaper of Coos Bay reports that 70-year-old Marlyn Schafer was charged with aggravated first-degree theft, which is a theft of more than $10,000. Schafer is a former mayor of Gold Beach and was a county commissioner from 2001 to 2008.
