ASHLAND, Ore. (AP) – Ashland High School doesn’t have a homecoming king and queen for the first time since the 1950s. This year three seniors were voted for the honor of “Grizzly Court Royalty.” Student body co-president Brielle Preskenis tells the Mail Tribune students decided to change the traditional homecoming king and queen to avoid exclusion and open the opportunity to students who are gender neutral or transgender.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Police are warning Eugene residents to beware of “ecstasy candy.” A bag with about 140 pieces of the drug-laced candy wrapped in plastic was seized last week when two men were arrested at a park. Lane County health officials tell KVAL other pieces of the candy that may have been distributed could be dangerous.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The head of the University of Oregon’s physics department has been hospitalized after he was stabbed. Authorities say his wife has been arrested. The Register-Guard reports that 57-year-old Regina Claypool-Frey was arrested early yesterday for investigation of first-degree assault, menacing and unlawful use of a weapon. Police said Raymond Frey was hospitalized in fair condition.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – A power outage that affected 4,500 Pacific Power customers in Bend was caused by a red-tailed hawk. The bird electrocuted itself Wednesday on a power pole. Pacific Power tells KTVZ the pole will be retrofitted with safety features to protect birds. She says the utility has retrofitted 8,000 poles in recent years and added 100 nesting platforms in an attempt to prevent birds from short-circuiting.
