Prep Basketball

The Siuslaw Viking Girls led from wire-to-wire Saturday afternoon and downed the Rogue River Chieftans 52-41 in a nonleague basketball contest in Florence.

Elyssa Rose scored 12 points; Destinie Tatum had ten; with Halee Richards and Mikaela Siegel adding eight points apiece.

The boys struggled in the nightcap Saturday, trading leads several times with Rogue River before falling 41-40. Siuslaw had two chances in the closing seconds to take the lead but could not get a shot to fall. Preston Mitchell led scoring with ten points, Joe Dotson had 9.

Wrestling…

Seven Viking Varsity wrestlers were on the mats at the 36-team Grants Pass Invitational over the weekend. Four of them brought home medals.

Isaiah Burkhalter finished fourth at 128 pounds and Dylan Jennings had what Coach Neil Wartnik described as a “break out” tournament, finishing fourth at 285.

Jose DeLa Mora was sixth at 120; Ricky Huff also sixth, at 106.

College Basketball:  Ducks win at home; Beavers lose on the road

Quinipiac held off Oregon State 60-52 yesterday morning in Hamden Connecticut. Quinipiac’s Zaid Hearst scored 20 points in the first half, but was held scoreless in the second period until he hit four straight free throws in the final seconds to ice the victory. Olaf Schaftenaar led Oregon State with 18 points.

Joseph Young led a new-look Oregon lineup with 23 points and Elgin cook added a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds as the Ducks beat Delaware State 83-70 Saturday afternoon in Eugene.

Coach Dana Altman, looking to change Oregon’s “lethargic” starts in its first ten games went with usual starters Young and Cook, but added Jalil Abdul-Bassit (think Elvis) and freshmen Jordan Bell and Casey Benson.

The Ducks play their final game before the Christmas break tonight. The Ducks host UC Santa Barabara. Airtime is 5:30 on KCST, tip off is set for 6 o’clock.
