SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) – City officials and residents are proposing safety improvements after a driver struck and killed three children in a Springfield intersection last month. The City Council will discuss safety proposals tonight. Ideas range from increased enforcement to more public safety announcements. The Feb. 22 collision killed 8-year-old John Alexander Day, 5-year-old McKenzie Mae Hudson and 4-year-old Tyler James Hudson.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) – Oregon, Idaho and Washington residents are among the top polluters in the nation when it comes to fine particle emissions from burning wood to heat homes. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency lists Oregon, Idaho and Washington as seventh, eighth and ninth respectively in per capita emissions. The three share chilly climates and a tradition of wood burning.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says maintenance and repair work will cause closures at all navigation locks at federal dams on the Columbia and Snake rivers. The Columbian reports the agency began closing locks this week. The Corps’ Portland District locks – at Bonneville, The Dalles and John Day – are scheduled to resume service on March 21. The rest of the locks, in the Walla Walla District, will be closed until April 4.

WESTPORT, Ore. (AP) – A new ferry has made its first run between Puget Island, Washington, and Westport on the Columbia River in Oregon. The ferry, named Oscar B, replaces the aging Ferry Wahkiakum (wah-KY’-uh-kum), which has been in service since 1962. The Oscar B will carry 23 passenger cars – nearly double the size of the Wahkiakum.
