There’s a new sheriff in Lane County…

The Lane County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously this morning to name Byron Trapp as the Sheriff effective May 1st. The current Chief Deputy will succeed his boss, Tom Turner, who is resigning to take over as Florence Police Chief.

The Commission interviewed Trapp and former Florence Police Chief Maury Sanders earlier today. They also heard from a variety of community members, law enforcement officials and co-workers who spoke in support of Trapp’s appointment.

They also acknowledged Sanders’ qualifications. He came to Florence 8-years ago from Stanislaus County, California where he was Under Sheriff and was in charge of the jail. Sanders retired in December 2012. Commissioner Pat Farr said Sanders would have made a “great sheriff” and Trapp had some “tough competition”. But, he added, Sanders had even tougher competition.

Commission Chair Jay Bozievich thanked both Sanders and Trapp and said the commission “had two legitimate choices”.

Trapp will serve until a special election can be held early next year. He said he was committed to the agency and would run for the post at that time.
