SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners have selected high school pitcher Nick Neidert and college pitcher Andrew Moore with their two selections on the first day of the Major League Baseball draft. Neidert, a right-handed pitcher from Peachtree Ridge High in Lawrenceville, Georgia, was taken at No. 60 overall. Moore, a right-hander from Oregon State, was selected at No. 72 overall.
DENVER (AP) – Troy Tulowitzki hit a three-run homer in the first and David Hale threw seven effective innings, lifting the Colorado Rockies to an 11-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals last night. Hale (2-0) was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to make a spot start and retired the opening nine batters before surrendering a solo homer to Kolten Wong. The right-hander allowed three runs and struck out seven.
SEATTLE (AP) – A group of blind athletes beat the Seattle Police Department in a game of beep baseball. The game was organized in an effort to encourage visually impaired people to get active. KOMO-TV reports that the Seattle South King Sluggers, a baseball team for visually impaired players, beat Seattle police 2-1 at Rainer Beach High School Playfield. The game was sponsored by South King Council of the Blind.
UNDATED (AP) – Two-time champion Lee Janzen finally made it back to the U.S. Open yesterday from one of eight 36-hole qualifiers across the country. Janzen had scores of 69-68 at Old Oaks and Century to earn the first of four spots available in the sectional qualifier in New York. The U.S. Open is June 18-21 at Chambers Bay south of Seattle.
