PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A North Portland bicyclist whose spine was broken when a pickup driver struck him and then drove off is suing the city, TriMet and ODOT for $21 million. The Oregonian reports that Michael Cooley’s lawsuit says that a mile-long stretch of North Interstate Avenue is so dangerously designed that it’s contributed to at least one cyclist’s death and nine cyclists’ injuries in the past 12 years.

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) – A judge has sentenced a Navy veteran whose lawyer says he suffers from PTSD to 16 ½ years in prison for setting two fires early on April 1 that destroyed an Albany high school cafeteria and damaged a nearby home. The Albany Democrat-Herald reports that the judge told Zachary Burghart yesterday that he caused a tragedy for the community. School officials say fire damage will exceed $15 million.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – A prosecutor has decided not to seek the death penalty against a Umatilla man charged with killing three people. The East Oregonian reports that court documents say Francisco Miranda may have shot and killed the two women and one man in retaliation for a break-in the night before.

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) – Two Josephine County commissioners who sent a letter to the Oregon Legislature opposing a bill that would restrict hemp production have revealed they are partners in a consortium that is growing hemp near Murphy. The Daily Courier reports that after threats of an ethics investigation against Commissioner Cherryl Walker, Commissioner Simon Hare has revealed that he also is in industrial hemp production.
