PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A wildfire that destroyed three dozen homes in Eastern Oregon has expanded to 85 square miles and more people have been told to leave their homes. After a week of burning out of control, the Canyon Creek Complex fire south of John Day is now 10 percent contained. Lightning started the fire Aug. 12. With another 10 major wildfires raging in Oregon, Gov. Kate Brown has deployed 125 National Guard troops to help. They are training in Salem before being sent to fire lines late next week.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The faculty union at the University of Oregon has tentatively agreed to new three-year contract. The Register-Guard reports the deal calls for a 3.5 percent total jump in cost-of-living raises over the next three years and a $650 lump sum payment to each full-time faculty member this November. The contract will be up for a ratification vote in early October.
SANTA CLARA, N.Y. (AP) – New York State Police say a 39-year-old Oregon man has drowned while swimming in a pond at his family’s camp in the Adirondacks. Troopers say Brian Gualtieri of Portland was on vacation and had arrived Sunday night at the family’s property in the northern Adirondacks. Police say emergency crews conducted life-saving measures for about 45 minutes but were not able to save him.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – A pack of wolves is making California home for the first time since 1924. State and federal wildlife authorities say a trail camera captured photos earlier this month of two adults and five pups in southeastern Siskiyou County. While a single wolf from Oregon has wandered into California, this is the first family.
