Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
JOHN DAY, Ore. (AP) – Cooler temperatures and reduced winds helped firefighters who were battling a large wildfire in Oregon south of the towns of John Day and Canyon City. The lightning-caused Canyon-Creek Complex of fires has burned about 109 square miles since Aug. 12. To the northeast, fire fighters also made progress on the Grizzly Bear Complex of fires in northeast Oregon and southeast Washington.
HOOD RIVER, Ore. (AP) – Police say it is “highly unlikely” that a 20-year-old Miami man who went missing after paddle boarding in the Columbia River is alive. KGW-TV reports that the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office says it believes Andres Pombo is likely dead but will continue searching until he is found. Investigators says his board had a video camera attached that showed Pombo falling into the water.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Unusually warm water has killed more than 150,000 summer steelhead fingerlings at an Umpqua River hatchery. Rock Creek Hatchery’s manager says many more may still die, potentially as much as 95 percent of this year’s batch. The Register Guard reports that hot water is dangerous for fish on its own. But it also creates an environment where bacteria and parasites can thrive.
TWISP, Wash. (AP) – Fire officials in Washington state say a complex of wildfires burning in north-central Washington is about 10 percent contained. A spokesman says containment does not mean the fire has stopped burning. It means it has run out of fuel to burn in that area, either because it has hit a man-made fire line, or a retardant drop or a road or lake. The Okanogan Complex of fires has burned more than 375 square miles.
