SEATTLE (AP) – Robinson Cano had a two-run homer and Nelson Cruz doubled in two runs to help the Seattle Mariners beat the Chicago White Sox 8-6 yesterday to avoid a three-game sweep. Seattle built a 7-1 lead through five innings, but the White Sox cut it to 7-6 with five runs in the sixth behind a pair of two-run homers. Adam Eaton singled with one out in the sixth and scored on Tyler Saladino’s double.

SNOQUALMIE, Wash. (AP) – Billy Andrade won the Boeing Classic yesterday for his second Champions Tour victory and first in an individual event, overcoming trouble early in the final round for a one-stroke victory. Andrade closed with a 1-over 73 to finish at 9-under 207 at TPC Snoqualmie Ridge. He opened with rounds of 69 and 65 to take a three-stroke lead into the final round. Andrade won four times on the PGA Tour.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) – Sophomore Ryan Finley has been named the starting quarterback for No. 23 Boise State for its season opener against Washington. Boise State coach Bryan Harsin made the announcement yesterday. Finley was in a four-way race for the job with Tommy Stuart, Alex Ogle and freshman Brett Rypien. Finley finished spring practice as the clear leader in the competition, but an April misdemeanor arrest clouded his status.

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Andrew McCutchen hit his 19th homer and Pedro Alvarez made up for some shaky defense by adding his 20th of the season as the Pittsburgh Pirates held off the San Francisco Giants 5-2 last night. Francisco Liriano (9-6) gave up two unearned runs and struck out five in 5 1/3 eventful innings to win his fifth straight decision. The Pirates are 10-0 in Liriano’s last 10 starts dating back to June 26.
