KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. (AP) – Klamath County has announced it is placing seven sheriff’s deputies on non-disciplinary administrative leave. The Klamath Falls Herald and News reports the county did not say why the deputies are being put on leave, although a press release sent out yesterday said it was per the deputies’ requests. Sheriff Frank Skrah says he will do his best to keep patrols operating for the benefit of the citizens.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Department of Transportation will be closing Interstate 5 through Portland for several nights and mornings this week for road paving. Transportation officials will set up detours using Interstate 405. The closures will take place on I-5 between the Marquam and Fremont Bridges and on Interstate 405 at I-5 southbound. The closures will happen at various locations tonight and tomorrow evening from 10 until 5 the next morning.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Seasonal wetlands are drying up more quickly than usual as drought conditions persist in the Willamette Valley. The Statesman Journal reports several ponds at the Ankeny national wildlife refuge have gone dry this year. Willamette Valley National Wildlife Refuge Complex’s project leader says many species of amphibians could be affected if continued drought conditions empty wetlands before breeding cycles end.
FRESNO, Calif. (AP) – Agricultural water providers in the Central Valley of California are asking a federal judge to stop releases of extra water intended to help salmon in the Klamath Basin survive the drought. No hearing date has been scheduled. At issue is water held in a reservoir on the Trinity River, which has been divided between the Trinity and Sacramento river basins since the 1960s.
