PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A 50-year-old Washington man accused of killing another man with one punch at Portland International Raceway has pleaded not guilty to criminal charges. The Oregonian reports that Michael Eugene Taylor faces second-degree manslaughter and second-degree assault charges in the July 10 death of Anthony Mancuso. Officials say the fight began at a motocross race that involved Mancuso’s and Taylor’s sons.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A federal judge has ruled that it is illegal to use motorized vehicles to remove juniper near Oregon’s Steens Mountains. The Capital Press reports that the judge ruled against the BLM, which is cutting juniper from 336,000 acres in the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management Area because the trees are crowding out native vegetation.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The archbishop of Portland is apologizing for placing too much trust in a priest who is suspected of hiding a camera in a church bathroom. The Oregonian reports that archbishop Rev. Alexander Sample says he feels betrayed by Father Ysrael Bien. Police believe Bien is in the Philippines.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – A group of Oregon State University veterinary students and alumni, as well as local veterinarians are traveling to Nicaragua to volunteer care for livestock and pets. The Corvallis Gazette-Times reports that 30 OSU students are traveling to the island of Ometepe, which has no veterinarians of its own. They’ll hold eight days of clinics to perform spaying and neutering procedures, treat illnesses and give seminars.
